Accessible Kindle

Making an accessible Kindle: The Frankenkindle

The Amazon Kindle is one of the many pieces of kit in the market which are fantastically popular and have revolutionised one of the world’s most popular past times: reading. However, using this eBook reader can be particularly difficult if you have ataxia, a movement disorder or perhaps difficulties with your fine motor skills. So there are lots of people interested in looking for ways of making a more accessible kindle. This was the case for engineer Glenn’s sister who has cerebral palsy but as this picture shows, having an engineer for a brother can be a great asset as he created this fantastic device so she can use her Kindle easily and christened it, the “Frankenkindle”.

Hacking a Kindle

The modified accessible Frankenkindle

As this picture shows, the Frankenkindle is a modified Kindle which allows Glenn’s sister to easily use her Kindle without being affected by the difficulties caused by her cerebral palsy. The tiny buttons in particular were extremely difficult to use but as the video at the bottom of the page from Glenn’s blog shows, it was an extremely technical process on his part to create the accessible eBook reader.

Cleverly, Glenn used the large controls from a children’s eBook reader (produced by VTech) as he realised the controls on this reader were much easier to use but the reader itself only held children’s books. Using his engineering prowess Glenn was able to both mount the Kindle and hack its content so as to reroute the controls to the VTech controller pad making it accessible for his sister.

As it stands, Glenn has yet to trial the Frankenkindle with his sister and it is purely in prototype stage but it will be great to see exactly where it goes next!

On another point, did you know Trabasack are currently developing a new product which will allow you to mount your Kindle or eReader to their lap tray bag? The new ‘Monti’ will be a flexibe low cost mount that will hold a Kindle or iPad in place. For more info contact Duncan{@}trabasack.co.uk or watch this space for updates!

Using rough ‘velcro’ or hook tape on a sensory play tray

Using Hook Tape with your Trabasack

A pack of four 30cms hook tapes

Trabasack Hook tapes, 120cms of tape, excellent value.

There are many great uses for your Trabasack and when you’re using it for sensory play or as an entertainment mount for your child’s toys and consoles, you must make use of the fantastic hook tapes which you can buy from the Trabasack website.

If you are the owner of a Trabasack with Connect surface, you’ll already be aware that the soft tray top means you can easily secure devices to it without having to worry about them sliding off. The easiest and safest way of connecting toys and devices to your Trabasack is with Trabasack’s own hook tape.

Why use hook tapes?

Hook tape is basically like Velcro and comes with stick on backing. You get 120cms of self adhesive backed tape, in four handy 30cms lengths. With hook tapes you can secure any device to your Trabasack Connect surface and it’ll remain safe. If your child is a film fan, you can safely secure their DVD player, if you’ve put together a fantastic sensory play scenario, again, you can use hook tapes to ensure all elements stay safe and in place.

Hook tape is like rough velcro tape

Hook tape is great for when you’re out and about because you can secure whatever entertainment device your child wants to play with safely to the tray top and it’ll remain safe as you go over lumps and bumps and even remains in place if you go up and down ramps on and off buses and trains.

The hook tapes can also be great if your child uses their Trabasack in school. Where portable computers, switches and communication aids are used they can easily be stuck into place and used easily throughout the school day and simply removed at the end of it.

The great thing about the Trabasack Connect is its versatility and this versatility is improved tenfold if you make use of fantastic hook tapes whether you’re playing, relaxing or learning.

Scream Free Shopping with Trabasack Play Tray

Play time with Trabasack

"Our Trabasack in use as a buggy tray!"

If you’ve got a little boy or girl who’s not yet steadily walking and still needs their buggy when you’re out and about, then chances are there are times you need to keep them entertained. To be fair, nobody finds grocery shopping or a trip round the DIY store fun so imagine how boring it is when you’re trapped in a buggy with nothing to do!

There’s no need to worry, Trabasack is a great way of giving your child a range of toys and games to play with whilst sat in the comfort of their buggy. If your child is anything at mine, they’ll desperately be trying to escape from the buggy at all times so a great lap tray packed with their favourite toys is a great way to keep them occupied.

Trabasack as a buggy tray for trips out

When me and my daughter go out, I attach the Trabasack easily to the front of the buggy and choose a few of her favourite toys to attach to it. I have a Trabasack Curve Connect which comes with a fantastic soft surface which allows for Velcro tapes to be used. These Velcro tapes mean I can attach the toys securely to the Trabasack and my little girl can play with them as we move without throwing them out of the pram every two seconds (I’m sure you know how annoying that gets).

Some of our favourite toys include:

-Mirror –a child friendly mirror safely hooked in place is fantastic so my daughter can make faces and laugh at her own reflection

-Fluffy Toy – a small fluffy toy is always one of our favourites. As she’s very young, my daughter loves getting to know new textures andsoft toys are among her very favourite for stroking and touching.

– Mini Abacus or moving beads – we have a mini abacus which my daughter loves to play with. She loves moving the beads from one side to another and this could easily be replicated with a homemade model.

– Velcro rattles – these are usually designed to have placed around the wrist or ankle but you can just easily stick them to your Trabasack Connect surface and play with them this way!

Scream free travels with your buggy tray

Since going out with the Trabasack, our trips to the supermarket have been a lot more “scream free” and she seems genuinely gripped to her usual old toys as soon as they’re stuck to the play tray surface in front of her. Even though she’s a long way from walking, she can happily lean forward and grab at her toys and enjoy herself whenever we’re out and about!

Trabasack is brilliant for making shopping trips stress free and scream free!

Travel tray for Kids

Travels with Trabasack – a great travel tray for kids

At this time of year it is a good idea to take a travel tray for kids with you when going out and about. If you are planning days out with your children take your trabasack with you. Trabasack is very useful on trips out and holidays, as this blog from Kim shows. Trabasack fan Kim has started a blog about accessible places to go with her sons. Places where she can use her sons buggy easily.

In her latest blog post we were thrilled to see trabasack being used by her son to touch and enjoy animals at a zoo.

"Finding a dry place to eat was at bit hard. I’m not sure if there was an indoor picnic area. We didn’t find one and there wasn’t signs that I could see. We opted to eat under the covered bit outside the toilet block by the play park and eating area. Good job I carry a camping stool and Dude owns a Trabasack which he was able to eat his lunch off. It also came in handy with balancing his animal feed whilst he fed the animals and again when he got the opportunity to hold a snake in the Butterfly House.

Getting around inside the Butterfly House was pretty easy. The staff were great too. Dude collared one when we were looking at the bugs and snakes and asked a million and one questions. He then brought a snake out for Dude to hold which I thought was very kind."

So courtesy of one of our customers who blogs we have access to some wonderful photos of her son using his Trabasack whilst visiting Sheffield’s Tropical Butterfly House. As the photos show, Trabasack is being used in a new way we couldn’t have imagined (a tray table for a snake?!) and it’s easy to see exactly how handy the play tray has been for their family. In fact, she has even said that the Trabasack is ‘the best invention ever’. We are so glad that as a travel tray for kids it is so useful.

Review by Specialist Teacher: Trabasack the ‘Portable Lap’

Trabasack: reviewed by Kate Ahern: a teacher of pupils with significant special needs

Trabasack’s reputation is growing and as more and more are sold, the reviews are coming in thick and fast and spreading across the blogosphere. One such review is Kate Ahern who blogs at Teaching Learners with Multiple Special Needs and as a teacher of pupils with significant needs, she was able to try out the Trabasack in her classroom.

Using a Trabasack in the classroom

Affectionately nicknamed a portable lap in Kate Ahern’s school, the Trabasack is made use of everyday particularly for lessons such as music therapy which are scheduled away from the the usual classroom tables. Kate explains that the Trabasack makes “it easier to ‘see’ the student instead of the equipment because it is smaller and looks more natural than a tray”. She also notes that the velcro-receptive feature of the Connect surface means switches and communication devices can be easily attached. The pupils also use the Trabasack for leisure, and use the surface to ‘stick’ their iPods and MP3 players to it, helping to keep them from falling off and handy when required.

Trabasacks for field trips

Kate also highlights how useful the Trabasack can be as a tray although explains that the bag function is equally useful. Its “wonderful that is can carry switches, symbols and sensory items while hanging on the back of a wheelchair and then be used as a tray to access those items” she says.  She also remarks how a Trabasack would have been perfect for field trips to the movies which had occurred in the previous year. It could help keep a student calm and comfortable she states. In fact, we have already considered how useful a Trabasack

can be for cinema trips as it provides a tray table area for drinks and snacks.

Kate’s review shows exactly how valuable a Trabasack can be in a school environment and how it can be a great mount for communication aids and for activities away from the school desks. Trabasack is a very useful edition to a teacher of children with special needs equipment, and helps to make more use of the equipment available.
